Mount Ashland opens

Skiers and snowboarders do the happy dance this morning: Mount Ashland's ski area is opening for the season.

The area is scheduled to be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. Daily skiing is set through Jan. 7, and the ski area is closed Tuesdays after that.

Ski area managers reported about 27 inches of packed snow at the lodge Wednesday and 30 at the top of the mountain.

Among new bells and whistles on the ski area Web site this season is a live Web camera that shows conditions at the mountain. Access it here.

Via the Mail Tribune, skiers and snowboarders can sign up for weekday text messages with conditions at Mount Ashland. Sign up for alerts here.
