Minor damage in Shady Cove fire; neighbor rescues pets

An attic fire at 10 Penny Court in Shady Cove caused minor smoke damage Saturday morning and is still under investigation, according to Jackson County Fire District No. 4 Chief Bob Miller.

Fire crews responded around 10:52 a.m. and saw smoke coming out of the attic vents of the property. No one was home at the time of the incident, but a neighbor did enter the home to rescue pets before the arrival of emergency personnel, Miller said.

The neighbor was later treated at the scene for smoke inhalation but did not require hospitalization, said Mercy Flights Field Supervisor Lawrence Bingham.

Miller said the fire originated near the home's furnace in the attic but the cause was still undetermined. The damage was mostly smoke damage, he said.
