Metal-grinding project sparked blaze

A spark caused by grinding rivets off a truck sparked a fire that burned about 60 tires and nearly half an acre of grassland in the 4100 block of Avenue A in White City this afternoon, said Don Hickman, Jackson County Fire District No. 3 deputy fire marshal.

The fire sent a plume of smoke rolling across the Rogue Valley and emergency crews closed a section of Avenue A while they battled the blaze.

Fire District No. 3 sent 14 firefighters and Oregon Department of Forestry sent another eight to battle the blaze, which was reported around 1:30 p.m.
