Merlin man says he could have shot 11-year-old boy by accident

A Merlin man said he could have been responsible for accidentally shooting an 11-year-old boy in the leg Wednesday while shooting a deer on his property, according to a news release.

Darren Green, 45, said he was in his home when he saw a deer come on the front area of his property. Green shot the deer four times, killing it.

Ulises Uriel Hernandez, 11, was waiting at a school bus stop at the intersection of Russell and Hartsfield roads when he was shot in the leg. He walked back to his home and called his mother to tell her about the shooting. He was transported to Three Rivers Community Hospital for treatment and was listed in fair condition Thursday morning.

Green said he later learned about Ulises' injury and told authorities on scene he thought one of the rounds from his 30/30 rifle could have struck Ulises, who was less than 100 yards away.

Oregon State Police seized his rifle as evidence. The investigation is ongoing.
