Memorial Day events planned

It's Memorial Day, and events are planned around Southern Oregon to mark the holiday. Here's a list:

— 9 a.m.: An hourlong event is set at the Oregon Fallen War Heroes Memorial at Don Jones Park, Hamrick Road, Central Point. It will include patriotic music provided by the Scenic Middle School Band and a Crater High School choir duet, a special flag ceremony by the Boy Scouts of America and speeches by U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden and U. S. Rep. Greg Walden.

— 10 a.m.: Events are planned at Memory Gardens Memorial Park, 1395 Arnold Lane, Medford. Event includes 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. guided tour of "The Last Supper Building," bagpipe music by Angus Richardson's Brother band at 11 a.m., a moment of silence at 3 p.m. in honor of military service personnel, followed by military honors including flag presentation, playing of taps, folding and presentation of the flag. Additional music will follow.

— 10:30 a.m.: An event at Mountain View Cemetery, 440 Normal Ave., Ashland, will begin with band selections by Volunteers of the Valley of the Rogue Horizon and Southern Oregon Concert Bands under the direction of Ivan Olinghouse. A memorial service begins at 11 a.m. with comments from the commanders of the American Legion and VFW. The keynote speaker is Lt. Col. Keith W. Ensley, ROTC program director at Southern Oregon University.

— 11 a.m.: Congressman Greg Walden and State Rep. Dennis Richardson will speak at a ceremony at Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Road. A flyover has been requested, and music will be provided by the Southern Oregon Scottish Bagpipe Band.

— All day: The Rogue Valley Cup, a 141-team soccer tournament at locations around Medford, continues throughout the day, with championship play beginning at 10 a.m. at several fields. Details are at

— All day: Boatnik, the Grants Pass Memorial Day festival that raises money for children's programs, continues throughout the day at and near Riverside Park in Grants Pass with boat races, food, contests, a carnival and other activities. Details are at

— All day: The Starthistle Fly-in, an annual hanggliding and paragliding event near Ruch, continues all day at Woodrat Mountain. Spectators often can see competitors from vantage points on Highway 238 southwest of Jacksonville. Details are at
