Medford police looking for driver from fatal hit-and-run crash

Medford police are searching for the woman suspected of hitting a van carrying reforestation workers early this morning near the Rogue Valley Mall.

The van rolled, killing one man and injuring three others, police said. The victims haven't been named yet.

Investigators have identified the woman they believe drove the pickup into the van as Leta Schroeder, also known as Ortiz. The 34-year-old is 5 feet, 6 inches tall, has a medium build and has very short, shaved hair. The photo police provided is from 2008 when her hair was much longer.

Schroeder left her pickup at the crash scene and ran away toward the mall, police said. She was gone when officers arrived, but police suspect she might have been injured.

Serious/Fatal Traffic Accident Reconstruction — S.T.A.R. — team members are still working at the intersection of Crater Lake Highway and Highway 99 where the accident took place. Police expect to reopen the intersection completely by 2 p.m.

Preliminary information shows that the van was traveling north on Highway 99 and was struck by a pickup truck traveling west on Crater Lake Highway. The impact caused the van to roll over. Police are not releasing any information yet on which vehicle disobeyed the traffic signal.

Anyone with information on Ortiz should contact Detective Katie Ivens at 541-770-4783.
