Medford police claim DUII honor

The Medford Police Department was selected the 2008 DUII enforcement city agency of the year.

The award was presented by the Oregon DUII Multi-Disciplinary Training Task Force at its conference April 17 in Portland.

The award is presented to a city police department that initiated or accomplished an effective DUII enforcement program that includes education, prevention, deterrence and community involvement. The department must also provide officer training.

The Medford Police Department arrested 544 impaired drivers during 2008. The department has arrested in excess of 500 DUII drivers in each of the last 5 years.

In addition to patrol and traffic officers enforcing DUII laws, the department employs six drug recognition experts. Officers with this expert training conducted 89 drug evaluations on suspected impaired drivers last year.
