Medford mother of newborn indicted on corpse abuse charges

MEDFORD — The mother of the newborn baby found dead inside a garbage bin at the Holiday Inn Express on Aug. 15 was indicted today on charges of abuse of a corpse and concealing the birth of an infant.

Denise L. Flanary, 19, was arrested at her home in the 500 block of Alice Street today and lodged in the Jackson County Jail. She was released after posting bail.

Second-degree abuse of a corpse is a felony; concealing the birth of an infant is a misdemeanor.

Medford police declined to comment on the case. They directed all inquiries to the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office.

Calls to the district attorney’s office seeking additional details were not returned tonight.

The baby’s body was discovered Aug. 15 by a homeless man who was rummaging through the garbage bin for recyclables.

Authorities have chosen not to release the results of an autopsy performed on the baby girl, citing the ongoing investigation.
