Medford Community Health Center gets $85,000 grant

Medford's Community Health Center received an $85,000 grant from the Reed and Carolee Walker Fund, according to a news release.

The Oregon Community Foundation grant will provide dental screening, fluoride varnishes, case management and oral-hygiene education to children in kindergarten through eighth grade in the Eagle Point, Prospect and Butte Falls School districts.

In many cases, the dental screening uncovers oral infections or cavities. Outreach workers then contact parents to help families accessing dental care in partnership with the Children's Dental Clinic and other resources.

According to the 2009 Oregon Smile Survey, 5,000 Oregon school children are in need of urgent care due to pain and infection from tooth decay daily.
