Medford bike burglar doesn't get far

A homeless man who threw a large rock through the front window of a Medford bike shop and made off with a bicycle was arrested minutes after the theft, police said.

Kenneth Justin Brown, 23, is suspected of stealing a $319 bicycle from Marty's Cycles, 720 Crater Lake Ave., just before 4 a.m. today.

Medford police arrived on scene to see Brown pedaling away on the bicycle. During the pursuit, Brown abandoned the bike and tried to run. Officers apprehended him, and he tried to pull away. During a brief struggle, Brown fell and cut his head, which required stitches, police said. No officers were hurt during his arrest.

Brown is held in the Jackson County Jail in lieu of $17,000 bail on charges of second-degree burglary, second-degree theft, criminal mischief and resisting arrest.
