Marine's memorial and funeral are today

A memorial service and funeral for Marine Sgt. Matthew J. DeYoung, of Talent, will be held today.

DeYoung, 26, of Talent, was killed Feb. 18 when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

The memorial begins at noon at Central Medford High School (formerly South Medford High School), 815 S. Oakdale Ave. The funeral service is at 3 p.m. at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Road, Eagle Point. Both ceremonies are open to the public.

In honor of DeYoung, flags across Oregon will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on the orders of Gov. John Kitzhaber.

DeYoung, a Phoenix High School graduate, is survived by numerous local family members, including his wife and 3-year-old daughter.
