Man who walked dog in road critical after car hits him

A 49-year-old man remained hospitalized in critical condition today from injuries suffered when he was struck by a vehicle Thursday night while he walked a dog on Highway 238 south of Grants Pass.

Daniel Glenn Gutierrez may have been walking the dog down the center of the highway near Milepost 9, according to a report to emergency dispatch about 10 minutes before the accident.

The accident happened at about 7:15 p.m. when a Ford F350 pickup truck driven by Stacey Fradd, 32, of Williams, was headed eastbound on the highway.

Fradd later reported to police that she saw Gutierrez in the middle of the road. She said she swerved to the left into the westbound lane but was unable to avoid the man, as he had also dodged to the westbound lane, said Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Scott Holsworth.

Gutierrez was seriously injured and transported by ambulance to Three Rivers Community Hospital, where he remained today. Gutierrez has lived in both Grants Pass and Seattle.

The dog suffered minor injuries from the accident and was taken to Pacific Veterinary Clinic.

Fradd was not injured.

Oregon State Police troopers from the Grants Pass office continue to investigate the incident.
