Man seriously injured when car rolls off cliff near Ruch

A man whose car rolled backward off a cliff south of Ruch Tuesday night is in serious condition at Rogue Valley Medical Center this morning.

Jonathan Scott Hanken, 47, no address available, was ejected from the car, a Mini Cooper, after it rolled off the cliff at mile marker 3 of Eastside Road, stopping after about 100 feet, according to a news release this morning from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident occurred just after 9 p.m. as Hanken was attempting to turn the car around in a narrow section of the road.

Crews from the Applegate Fire District had to rappel down the cliff to remove Hanken from the car, the release said.

Police said they believe alcohol was a factor in the wreck. An investigation is continuing.
