Man held on $5 million bail in family abuse case

A Medford man faces two counts each of first-degree rape and incest, three counts of first-degree sexual abuse and one count each of strangulation and harassment in what Medford police described as years of sexual abuse of a family member.

Dana William Sword, 22, of the 1100 block of Spring Street, Medford, was arrested Monday night and remained in the Jackson County Jail today on $5 million bail.

The victim, who is now an adult, recently reported the abuse, which allegedly stretched back into childhood, Medford police Detective Sgt. Mike Budreau said.

The rape, incest and sexual abuse charges are all Measure 11 crimes. The mandatory minimum sentences in those crimes range from six to eight years.

Sword is set to make his first appearance in Jackson County Circuit Court on the charges this afternoon.
