Lou Gehrig's walk today

The local version of the national Walk to Defeat ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease, is today in Medford.

Registration for the three-mile event is at 11 a.m., and the walk starts at noon. In all, 150 similar walks are planned around the nation.

Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive, fatal, neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe.
