Log prices improve

Improved U.S. housing starts and permits have bolstered the price for logs and mill studs in Southern Oregon.

An Oregon Natural Resources Report online post said log prices have ended an eight-month decline and stud prices have stabilized.

The report said Southern Oregon studs are maintaining a new plateau in the range of $160 per 1,000 board feet, well above the $140 per thousand board feet range earlier this year.

According to Umpqua Coquille LLC, log producers kept production high long after building materials demand waned in order to cover internal costs. Those producers have now trimmed production sufficiently to fall below the demand curve, putting a floor under log prices.

Umpqua Coquille said housing starts and attractive mortgage rates recently have improved the single-family housing market.
