Local employment numbers see small gains

Jackson County's total payroll employment added about 760 jobs in June, the U.S. Bureau of Labor reported.

The county's seasonally adjusted unemployment for the month was 10.4 percent, holding steady from one month ago, but down from 11.7 a year earlier. The county's unemployment rate is still higher than the state and national rates of 8.5 and 8.2, respectively.

During June, construction added 100 jobs and manufacturing added 110, while wholesale trade added 50 and retail added 120. Professional and business services added 70, while leisure and hospitality added 280.

Other services saw a decline of about 20 jobs, as did government.

In the past year, employment has grown 1.7 percent, with the addition of 1,280 nonfarm payroll jobs. Private sector employment added 1,690 jobs while 410 government jobs disappeared.
