Lithia Park OSF shows get the OK

ASHLAND — The Ashland City Council approved an exception to city noise rules to allow the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to operate a temporary tent theater in Lithia Park.

On Tuesday night, the City Council also authorized OSF's use of Lithia Park for the tent, finalizing an earlier Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission endorsement of the tent solution.

OSF is working to build a platform and erect a tent in the park to house performances that had been planned for the Angus Bowmer Theatre. The theater is closed as OSF grapples with a cracked support beam discovered earlier this month.

Although the tent will have a liner to muffle noise, sound from the performances still could escape. OSF also will run air conditioning units.

No one came forward to voice concerns about potential noise impacts at the City Council's Tuesday meeting.

This week, Angus Bowmer Theatre performances have been moved to the Historic Ashland Armory through Saturday and the Craterian Ginger Rogers Theater on Sunday.

OSF officials said they will announce next week when performances will begin in the tent, which they are calling "Bowmer in the Park."
