Liquid natural gas station in Central Point may be state's first

The first of three 40-foot tanks that will hold liquid natural gas is being installed today near the Pilot Travel Center and Holiday Inn Express in Central Point.

The giant fuel tanks will serve as what could be the first liquid natural gas station to open in Oregon, though that could not immediately be confirmed.

Clean Energy Fuels Corp., based in Seal Beach, Calif., is constructing three liquid natural gas stations in Oregon. The other two, in Stanfield and Portland, will be completed by late 2012 and early 2013.

Central Point Parks and Public Works Director Matt Samitore said company representatives expect the station, being construction in collaboration with the Pilot Travel Center, to be operational within 30 days.
