Lightning strikes didn't spark fires

The National Weather Service reported about 700 lighting strikes in Jackson, Josephine, Douglas and Klamath counties between 2 and 9 p.m. Monday, but didn't start any significant fires.

A small tree fire that quickly went out was reported by Jackson County Fire District No. 5 outside of Ashland.

So far no other fires have been reported, although the Oregon Department of Forestry sent engines out to check on reports of smoke in the Wards Creek area outside of Rogue River and the Foots Creek area outside of Gold Hill. (Correction: The name of the drainage outside Rogue River has been corrected in this story.)

Even though some areas of Southern Oregon experienced rain, Brian Ballou, ODF fire prevention specialist, said the rain was spotty and wouldn't necessarily hamper a fire.

"It's really common to see a flicker of flame in the woods without being able to find it later," Ballou said.

People are urged to call 911 if they spot smoke or fire.
