Legislative budget deal cuts schools, courts

SALEM — Some Oregon school districts may end their school years a few days early, and all the state courts will close on Fridays as a result of a budget package endorsed by a legislative panel.

The Joint Ways and Means Committee today approved $300 million in cuts to deal with a projected deficit in the current two-year budget.

The package cuts state aid to public schools for the final four months of the budget cycle, though not by as much as first proposed.

A school administrators group says two-thirds of school districts will be able to complete the school year but in other districts schools might end two or three days early.

House and Senate votes on the budget cuts are planned next week.
