Learn about history of old mines

Two U.S. Bureau of Land Management archaeologists with the abandoned mine lands unit will discuss the role mining played in the historical and environmental development of Southern Oregon

The presentations will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at the BLM/Forest Service Medford Interagency Office, 3040 Biddle Road, Medford, and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the BLM/Forest Service Grants Pass Interagency office, 2164 NE Spalding Ave., Grants Pass.

There are more than 600 known abandoned mines on BLM lands in Southern Oregon, and potentially more than twice that number on Forest Service and private lands in the area. The speakers will cover the types of features found at mining sites, how to interpret them, the dangers associated with abandoned mines, and ways Medford BLM office is resolving environmental issues and archiving these mines.
