La Clinica receives $450,000 for Central Point clinic

La Clinica announced today it has received a $450,000 grant from the Kresge Foundation that will help complete construction of its new Central Point clinic.

The nonprofit health-care provider set out in September 2007 to raise $3.5 million to build and equip the Central Point clinic. With the Kresge grant, it has raised about $2.85 million. Funds to operate the clinic are provided by a $650,000 federal grant.

The grant is a challenge grant, meaning La Clinica must raise an equal amount in matching funds by May 2009. The clinic opened in September.

Maria Ramos Underwood, La Clinica's development director, said she was confident the 20-person development team will raise the matching funds.

La Clinica was founded in 1988 to serve migrant and seasonal farm workers. It has since broadened its focus to provide health care for low-income families within the general population. Sixty percent of its patients are now non-Hispanic.
