Injured motorcyclist dies in Springfield hospital

Updated, 11:40 a.m. A Medford man seriously injured Sunday afternoon when his motorcycle collided with a sport utility vehicle on Interstate 5 just south of the Brownsville interchange near Eugene died early today at a hospital, Oregon State Police reported.

Richard A. Graybeal, 76, was riding a 1996 Honda Goldwing motorcycle south on I-5 when he struck a passing 1987 Jeep Cherokee driven by Thomas C. Olson, 52, of Redding, Calif. The crash, which happened at about 12:35 p.m. Sunday, sent Graybeal and his bike tumbling and skidding nearly 300 feet on the pavement before coming to rest on the right shoulder of the southbound lanes.
Olson was able to pull over safely after the crash, and he and his two teenage passengers were uninjured.

Graybeal was wearing a helmet but was seriously injured. He was airlifted to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield, where he reportedly died about 3:30 a.m. today from his injuries, OSP said.

Troopers are continuing the investigation.
