Hospital pharmacy loses drugs in second break-in

A man kicked in the back door of Rogue Valley Medical Center's Asante Health System pharmacy on East Barnett Road early today and stole about $4,000 of a variety of prescription medications.

"He took all sorts of different types of drugs," said Marvin Haas, chief finance officer for Asante.

The break-in, the pharmacy's second this year, occurred about 2 a.m., said Medford police Lt. Tim Doney.

The burglar, still at large, was caught on film by a surveillance camera, said Doney. He described him as having a stocky build, wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt, pants and shoes as well as a ski mask and a hat.

It's the second break-in at the pharmacy this year. In January, a break-in and narcotics theft were reported. Medford police said the burglars snatched nearly 10,000 pain pills in that heist.

Haas said the pharmacy, which upgraded security measures after January's burglary, will make further changes, including installing a steel door, today.
