Hobnob with cobs

There should be at least a kernal of new information for everyone in an indigenous corn festival today in Ashland.

It's set in conjunction with the annual Tribal Gathering and Welcome Back Pow Wow scheduled by Southern Oregon University's Native American Student Union from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the gym and cafeteria at Ashland Middle School, 100 Walker Ave. There's no admission charge, but donations will be accepted.

The festival will include indigenous corn cultivation, preservation and preparation techniques, instruction on preparing corn for grinding, hands-on tortilla making and sample food, drinks and candies made from corn.

Also planned: indigenous dancers from Mexico and North America and other parts of the world and a tamale contest.

Details: 245-1625.
