Historic building featured at open house

An annual open house to showcase the restoration of the historic JK Van Sant Building at 542 A St., Ashland, is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The building, one of the few remaining wood-frame commercial buildings and the only simple false-front store within the Railroad District, will be open to show the work of local craftsmen who built it in the early years of the last century and those who carefully restored a century later. Property owners David Gremmels and Cary Bryant, who also own the Rogue Creamery, spent years restoring the building, which now houses Helena Darling's Palace Cafe. A restaurant called the Palace Cafe was also a tenant of the building when it was new.

During the open house, historic photos and restoration plans will be available, and award-winning Rogue Creamery bleu and cheddar cheeses can be sampled. The cafe also will be open.
