Highway hog briefly slows I-5 traffic

A hog fell from a trailer on Interstate 5 near the north Medford interchange, briefly tying up traffic as motorists gawked at a pig on the loose.

The accident was reported just before 5 p.m. at exit 33. The vehicle the hog had fallen from continued down the road, but circled back to collect its missing cargo, Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman Gary Leaming said.

Oregon State Police, transportation department crews and other drivers stopped to help corral the critter, which was injured in the fall and might have been struck by another passing vehicle, Leaming said. The pig was still alive and was able to get back into the trailer at about 5:05 p.m., he said.

The spectacle slowed traffic, but no lanes were closed. With the pig back on its way, Leaming expected normal travel to resume quickly.
