Here comes a holiday week

Most Rogue Valley kids — and some lucky adults, too — are looking at a string of days free from their usual responsibilities this week.

Thanksgiving's not until Thursday, but many public schools are closed all week, and some businesses will be closed Thursday and Friday.

If you're traveling, routes to the north and the south present opportunities for slow going, thanks to road construction.

The Oregon Department of Transportation has Interstate 5 narrowed to a single lane in each direction at milepost 57, near the north Grants Pass exit, ODOT reports.

It expects the worst times to travel through the roadwork to be Wednesday afternoon and evening and Sunday afternoon. Details are available at

In California, construction on the Pit River bridge just north of Redding on I-5 could delay travelers for as long as two hours, depending on when they travel through the area and which direction they're headed.

California's highway department says southbound travelers should expect only "minimal" delays on Wednesday, no delays Thursday and Friday and delays of up to an hour on Saturday.

Northbound travelers could face delays of as much as 20 minutes between noon and 5:30 p.m. Sunday. People heading south that day could be delayed up to two hours, California officials say. Details: 530-225-3054.

And the weather? The National Weather Service reports a falling chance of rain but lows below freezing temperatures today through Thanksgiving.
