Help available for veterans

The 22nd annual Southern Oregon Stand Down for veterans in need will be held Oct. 2 at the Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics in White City.

The event will be from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the baseball field on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs facility, 8495 Crater Lake Highway.

In military parlance, a stand down is a time of rest and recovery for exhausted combat veterans.

Although the stand down has been trimmed to a one-day event, it will offer the same assistance to down and out veterans, organizers say.

Services being offered again this year include VA medical and mental health screenings, VA drug and alcohol counseling, woman veterans counseling and assistance, homeless court and legal tent, employment and vocational counseling, housing assistance, help with VA and Social Security claims, IRS assistance, clothing and haircuts in a safe environment, according to event coordinator Bob Huff, a fellow veteran.
