Head for the hills

Providing you can avoid a new storm, today should be a fine day for almost any snow activity.

Crater Lake National Park offers its annual series of snowshoe hikes beginning this afternoon, Mount Ashland's ski area is scheduled to be open all day and the Southern Oregon Nordic Club has a moonlight ski trip planned tonight.

The free snowshoe hikes are ranger-led one-mile walks through forests and meadows at about 7,100 feet along Crater Lake's rim. Officials say they're appropriate for anyone 8 or older who's ready for a moderately strenuous outing.

Hikers can bring their own snowshoes or use the park's.

At Mount Ashland, the ski area is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the ski bus will be running.

Participants in the nordic club's ski trip will leave Medford at 4 p.m., have dinner at the Fish Lake restaurant and leave there about 6 p.m. to ski the Pitt View trail. The 4-mile trip is intermediate difficulty.
