Gun-theft suspect returns to store; this time he's arrested

A man suspected of stealing two shotguns from Medford's Sportsman's Warehouse early Tuesday returned to the store on Wednesday, and an alert employee recognized him as the suspect from the earlier robbery, police said.

Store employees called the Medford police detective handling the case to report that the man had left the store on a bicycle, Medford police Lt. Bob Hansen said in a news release this morning.

Detectives found the man near Food 4 Less on Biddle Road, and after a brief chase they arrested Trevor Gene Cheney, 20, of the 900 block of West 10th St., Medford.

Two Beretta 12-gauge shotguns reportedly stolen during Tuesday's burglary were found at Cheney's house, police said.

Initial reports indicated Cheney had gone into the store before it closed Monday night, stayed hidden inside until the middle of the night, then escaped with the two guns valued at $3,000. He was seen in surveillance photos and he left behind a distinctive hat, police said.

Cheney remains in jail today on a first-degree burglary charge and two counts of first-degree theft. Bail is set at $45,000.
