Grants Pass stabbing victim dies in Portland hospital

A Selma man now faces an attempted murder charge after the 25-year-old Grants Pass man he allegedly stabbed in the head during a Saturday night fight at a Grants Pass lounge died today in a Portland hospital from his injuries.

Michael McCoy was pronounced dead at 11:30 this morning at the Oregon Health and Sciences University where he was being treated for injuries he received in the 11:30 p.m. fight at the Red Rock Lounge, according to the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety.

McCoy was allegedly stabbed by Britt Jason Jones, 39, of Selma, who was taken into custody Sunday at his residence on first-degree assault and other charges, police said. Jones’ charges were upgraded to attempted murder and that could be upgraded to a murder charge by Josephine County prosecutors, police said.

Police said Jones stabbed McCoy and fled the lounge at 112 NE Morgan Lane. Investigators later went to his Selma residence and found him hiding there after an extensive search, police said. He was taken to the Josephine County Jail.

McCoy was initially taken to the Asante Three Rivers Medical Center and was later transferred to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford before he was flown OHSU for treatment, police said.

The case remains under investigation and officials expect to file additional charges. Anyone with further information on the case should contact Grants Pass police at 541-450-6260.
