Get down, get cool in a cave

Would-be cavers can try their hands -- and legs, shoulders and even bellies -- at the craft during an introduction to caving tour at the Oregon Caves National Monument today.

The four-hour tours will be offered at 12:30 p.m. Saturdays through Sept. 1.

But it’s not for the faint of body: Participants must be in good physical condition and able to support their body weight with their arms.

The tour, which involves climbing and descending rocky slopes and boulders, crawling on hands and knees, crossing uneven surfaces and even belly sliding, is not recommended for people with heart, respiratory, back, shoulder or joint problems or those who suffer panic attacks or claustrophobia.

If that’s not warning enough, park service officials say cavers must be at least five feet tall, not larger than a size limit and at least 15 years old.

The cost is $30.
