Four from area win Heritage awards

Four Southern Oregonians were among the winners of the third annual Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards, presented Friday at the Northwest History and Heritage Extravaganza in Portland.

Applegate Valley residents Lyn and Reeve Hennion were honored for their decades-long commitment to preserving and protecting Buncom, a ghost town in the Applegate Valley. Roger Brandt, of Josephine County, was recognized for his many efforts to document and promote the history and heritage of sites along Highway 199, and more specifically, the Siskiyou smokejumper base near Cave Junction.

Dirk Siedlecki, of Eagle Point, was honored for his efforts to protect and preserve the Jacksonville Cemetery while lending his expertise to other historic cemetery pro-jects all over Oregon.

The four-day Northwest History and Heritage Extravaganza included the 2009 Oregon Heritage Conference, the Pacific Northwest History Conference and the annual meetings of the Northwest Archivists and the Northwest Oral History Association.
