Forum explores Ashland water issues

Ashland's League of Women Voters has organized a community forum tonight to discuss the city's water issues.

It's at 7 p.m. at the Ashland Community Center, 59 Winburn Way. The forum is open to the public.

Officials will discuss goals of and progress on a $3 million environmental review of a proposal to enclose 150 miles of irrigation ditch in pipelines, a move that would prevent water loss to evaporation and seepage.

They also will discuss the city of Ashland's proposal to use ditch water for irrigation in town by building a secondary pipe system.

Ashland residents' demand for water in summer is high — 7 million gallons a day — compared with 2 million gallons in winter. Tonight's forum also will delve into issues such as whether Ashland has enough drinking water to meet present and future demand.
