Former Eagle Point running back dies in crash

Former Eagle Point High School football star Kristopher L. Butler died Sunday after the vehicle he was driving left the road and struck several trees along Dead Indian Memorial Road.

Butler, 21, who was also a player with the Southern Oregon Renegades and the Klamath Crusaders semi-professional football team, was pronounced dead at the scene of the early morning accident. Butler lost control of his red two-door Mazda near milepost 31 shortly after 6:30 a.m., said Klamath County Sheriff Tim Evinger.

Butler was driving northbound when he failed to make a left turn and left the road on the right side. The vehicle hit the first tree on the front passenger side and struck several more on the driver's side before coming to a stop, Evinger said.

Keno Fire and Ambulance Department members attempted to free Butler from the severely damaged vehicle, but Butler "expired before he could be extricated," Evinger said.

Based on evidence at the scene, alcohol may have been a factor in the incident, Evinger said.

Oregon State Police also responded to the crash.
