KLAMATH FALLS — Oregon Tech forward Katie O'Brien, a 5-foot-9 sophomore from Jacksonville, has been named the Cascade Conference offensive soccer player of the week after scoring four goals in three matches and lead the Owls to a 2-1 record.
O'Brien is a graduate of Cascade Christian High. Her four goals included a three-goal effort against then-sixth-ranked Carroll College, which had yielded just one goal in its previous seven games.
O'Brien is Oregon Tech's leading scorer with eight goals in nine games. Her hat trick against Carroll College was her second of the season. The other came against William Jessup University on Sept. 3.
Karyn Allen of Corban, a 5-8 junior goalkeeper from Merlin, helped her team to a 1-1 record last week, including a 1-0 road win over Cascade, to win conference and Region I defensive player weekly honors. She allowed just one goal in 90 minutes in a 1-0 loss to eighth-ranked Concordia.
North Medford High graduate Duston Fender scored his first goal as a Rogue Valley Wrangler, but the local junior hockey team lost its second straight game to Tri-City on Saturday, 10-4, at The RRRink.
Fender's goal on one of three assists by Mickey Allison tied the game 2-all in the first period.
Allison set up Steffan Buck's goal in the second period, knotting it 3-all for the Wranglers (0-2). But with only 13 players at their disposal, a tired and depleted Wranglers' roster couldn't keep up with the Titans (2-0).
Rogue Valley's David Giguere added a power-play goal in the 17th minute of the third period.
