Flags lowered to half-staff in honor of Talent Marine

Flags across Oregon will be flown at half-staff on from sunrise to sunset Saturday in memory of United States Marine Sgt. Matthew J. DeYoung, Gov. John Kitzhaber ordered today.

DeYoung, 26, of Talent, died Feb. 18, 2011, while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

"Sergeant DeYoung was an outstanding Marine who served his state and his country with honor and distinction," Kitzhaber said in a statement announcing his order regarding flags at public institutions. "His sacrifice for our nation will never be forgotten."

DeYoung's memorial and funeral will be held Saturday. The memorial begins at noon at Central Medford High School (formerly South Medford High School), 815 S. Oakdale Ave. The funeral service is at 3 p.m. at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, 2763 Riley Road, Eagle Point. Both ceremonies are open to the public.
