Flags lowered in memory of Oregon soldier and his dog

Flags at public institutions will be flown at half-staff throughout Oregon today in honor of Army Cpl. Kory Duane Wiens and his dog, Cooper.

Wiens, 20, of Independence, died alongside his dog on Friday, July 6, in Muhammad Sath, Iraq, the victims of a makeshift bomb. They were assigned to the 94th Mine Dog Detachment, 5th Engineer Battalion, 1st Engineer Brigade based out of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Corporal Wiens and Cooper were both laid to rest Wednesday.

Wiens graduated from West Albany High School in 2005.

"Wiens and Cooper were outstanding soldiers, Oregonians and best friends," said Gov. Ted Kulongoski in a prepared statement. "Wiens and Cooper were a team who gave everything their best."
