Fire keeps 138 closed

Highway 138 remains closed east of Glide, as a wildfire dubbed the Williams Creek fire continues to grow on the north side of the highway.

The highway will remain closed all day. Conditions will be re-evaluated Thursday morning, transportation and forest officials said.

Drivers are advised to use alternate routes. Eastbound traffic is being turned around at mile 26, west of Susan Creek, and westbound traffic is being turned around at mile 39, just west of the Dry Creek Store.

The Williams Creek fire has burned 500 acres and was very active, Umpqua National Forest officials reported this morning. It is not contained at all and is burning to the north and west in rugged terrain.

Two helicopters, two air tankers dropping fire retardant, a bulldozer and 225 firefighters are working on the fire.
