Fire crews dub early morning fire suspicious

Fire officials say a fire that chewed through an abandoned home on Thomas Road early this morning is suspicious in nature.

The fire was called in just before 1 a.m. by a neighbor who saw heavy smoke and some fire pouring off the 1502 Thomas Road house. Medford Fire-Rescue responded with four engines with an additional engine from the Jacksonville Fire Department. By the time crews arrived, flames had spread from the back porch to the attic.

Battalion chief Brian Fish said crews acted defensively and did not enter the structure, extinguishing the blaze from the outside. Firefighters were able to knock it down in about 30 minutes and remained on scene for an additional two hours mopping up hot spots. No one was hurt.

Fish said there was no sign of forced entry, no gas hookup and no power on in the abandoned home.

"Right now it is kind of suspicious," he said.

A fire investigator will head back out to the property today to continue an investigation on the fire's cause.
