WADSWORTH, Ohio — Former South Medford High star Ryan Fiegi's Galaxy squad overcame a 23-point halftime deficit to defeat Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital, 94-83, to claim seventh-place in the 2008 Collegiate Basketball Invitational.
Adron Marshall of Mountain State scored 17 of his 21 points in the second-half to help Galaxy.
Fiegi, this season's NAIA Division II player of the year for national champion Oregon Tech, scored nine points, grabbed three rebounds and had two assists in 36 minutes.
Falling behind 54-31 at halftime, Galaxy outscored WRH 63-29 in the second-half, which included a 21-4 spurt in the first five minutes of second stanza to shrink the deficit. A big key for the comeback was Galaxy's ability to limit the WRH's 3-point shooting as WRH connected on 10-14 in the first-half, but only 2-9 in second-half.
The Collegiate Basketball Invitational is a major national basketball event that gathers the finest 64 senior men's basketball players from all of NCAA Division II and Division III and NAIA Division I and Division II.
Joel Salmond, who helped Ashland to a top-10 finish in the 2005 boys golf state championships, is on the Point Loma Nazarene University team that recently won the NAIA Region II championship.
Salmond, a freshman, shot a three-day total of 225 for the San Diego school and placed fifth individually, earning a spot on the all-region team. His scores were 73, 77 and 75 at Cypress Ridge Golf Course near San Luis Obispo, Calif.
