Explore multiple musical traditions

A mad mix of musical styles is up tonight at Havurah Shir Hadash, 185 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland.

St. Clair Productions presents The Andy Statman Trio at 8 p.m. with a portion of the proceeds from the show going to the synagogue.

Statman, who plays mandolin and clarinet, began his recording career as a teenager in the '60s as a session man for musicians including Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia and David Bromberg. He now has nearly 30 records of his own as well as appearances on the recordings of others.

Statman describes his music as "a spontaneous, American-roots form of very personal, prayerful Hasidic music, by way of avant-garde jazz," and promised that he and bassist Jim Whitney and percussionist Larry Eagle will play a mix of klezmer, bluegrass, blues and jazz.

Tickets cost $22 at the door. Children under 12 are admitted free and youths 12-17 get in for $10. Call 535-3562 for details.
