Erickson completes unusual Italian project

Erickson Air-Crane unit European Air-Crane aided Danish alternative energy firm Vestas Wind Systems A/S in the construction of 12 three-megawatt wind turbine generators on windy ridge tops near the mountain village of Ricigliano, Italy, southeast of Salerno and Mount Vesuvius.

Erickson said its S-64F Aircrane flew with a 400-foot-long line to deliver 36 turbine blades along with three additional replacement blades, each measuring 144 feet.

Narrow, steep and winding roads prohibited ground access to the site. The Erickson aircraft carried parts nine miles to each construction site from a central staging yard over a four-day period.
