Eagle Point hires Medford finance chief

Medford schools' finance controller Scott Whitman has been hired to serve as Eagle Point schools' new business information and operations manager.

Whitman replaces Randy Struckmeier, who was put on administrative leave in March and dismissed in May for "failure to meet district expectations for the budget cycle and to maintain adequate relations with staff." Dan Zaklan has been serving as the district's interim business manager since March.

Whitman, who has been finance controller for Medford schools since 2006, will begin his new job in mid-July and earn $90,000 annually in his new position.

He was selected out of a pool of seven candidates, said Eagle Point schools Human Resources Director Michael Remick.

"What we were looking for was a clear communication about what the budget is and formatting that is easy to follow and easy to understand and keep up on," Remick said. "He reflected our philosophy that a business department is a service organization. Its role is to provide information so that people can make decisions."

He earned his bachelor's degree in business finance from the University of Oregon in 1985 and a two-year post baccalaureate accounting certificate from Portland State University in 2000. He later served as an accountant for the city of Ashland. (The previous sentence has been altered to remove an error.)
