Dispose of unwanted prescription drugs on Saturday

Medford police and the Drug Enforcement Administration will collect unwanted or expired prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the lobby of the police department in City Hall, 411 W. Eighth St. The drop-off service is free and anonymous.

Police said drugs that are not used for long periods of time and left in home cabinets increase the probability of drug abuse and misuse. By dropping off unneeded medication, people can help prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous drugs, officials said in a news release about the event.

Last September, the DEA and more than 3,000 state and local law enforcement partners operated nearly 4,100 sites and Americans turned in 242,000 pounds — 121 tons — of prescription drugs, officials said.

Efforts are under way nationally to create a system to provide safe options for disposing of unwanted prescription medication. Organizers of Saturday's event said local collection days are planned periodically.
