DeFazio: Oregon Medicare payments will grow under plan

Oregon hospitals and doctors can look forward to increased Medicare reimbursements under the health care overhaul headed for President Obama's desk.

U.S. Rep. Peter DeFazio said today that he and other members of Congress threatened to vote against the bill to win steps to correct long-standing geographic inequities in Medicare reimbursements.

The Springfield Democrat says that $400 million will go over the next two years to states that have historically been paid much less that others, and studies will be done to correct the system long-term.

Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems spokesman Andy Van Pelt says the $400 million is a start, but Medicare reimbursements for doctors and hospitals fell short by $1.7 billion in Oregon alone in 2007.
