Concrete poured on Barnett, but it has to cure

Workers finished pouring concrete on the new Barnett Road bridge over Bear Creek in Medford today as they raced to get it open for traffic by Jan. 12.

The first half of the concrete was poured Thursday. Altogether, 50 trucks delivered 500 cubic yards for the eight-inch-thick bridge deck.

Gary Leaming, spokesman for the Oregon Department of Transportation, said contractor Wildish Standard Paving of Eugene faces a Jan. 12 deadline to finish the bridge.

Leaming said the contractor had hoped to open the bridge sooner, but cold weather stalled the concrete pouring.

After the concrete has set for 14 days, traffic could begin using the bridge, but other work needs to be done, including sidewalks, a median, railings and striping.
