COI women hold on to snap SOU's four-game win streak

CALDWELL, Idaho — A pair of late 3-pointers by senior Whitney Scott were not enough as College of Idaho scored a 54-48 women's basketball victory over Southern Oregon Friday in Cascade Conference play.

Southern Oregon (13-9, 6-4 CC) had its four-game winning streak snapped. College of Idaho is 11-9 and 6-4.

Scott led the Raiders with 19 points, including five 3-pointers. Alexi Smith had 10 points and six rebounds.

Meghan Hughes led College of Idaho with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Nicole Bruce had 10 points.

Neither team could get much going offensively. The Coyotes shot just 33 percent, while the Raiders hit on only 28 percent. The teams combined for 58 turnovers.

The second half was back-and-forth with neither team leading by more than four until the 4:21 mark, when a pair of free throws gave the Coyotes a 43-38 lead.

The lead was pushed to 49-42 with three minutes to play, then Scott began to heat up.

Scott's 3-pointer at 2:45 made it 49-45. Another 3-pointer by Scott trimmed it to 49-48 with 1:15 to play, but the Coyotes made 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to pull away.

Men's Basketball

COLLEGE OF IDAHO 80, SOU 54 — At Caldwell, Idaho, Southern Oregon fell behind 14-0 and 18-2 and never recovered in the Cascade Conference game.

Sam Osofsky was the lone player to score in double-digits for the Raiders (12-8, 5-5 CC), with 17 points.

Kelly McCarty led the Coyotes (10-11, 7-3) with 22 points.

The Coyotes took the Raiders out of the game early, taking a 14-0 lead with 13:56 to play in the first half. A jumper by Dex Daum seconds later got the Raiders on the board.

College of Idaho led 37-19 at halftime and cruised from there.


OSU SECOND — At Norman, Okla., No. 6 Oregon State finished second in a quad meet with 194.650 points, behind No. 3 Oklahoma's 195.300.

Freshman Britney Ranzy, competing for the first time at OSU, won the vault with a score of 9.925. Teammate Leslie Mak tied for first on the balance beam with a 9.875.


CAL POLY 18, OSU 15 — At Corvallis, No. 13 Oregon State scored bonus points in three of its four victories but lost to the No. 24 Cal Poly Mustangs.

The Beavers' Jason Lara (125), Scott Sakaguchi (149) and Colby Covington (174) each won by major decision and Brice Arand (184) added a decision.

Oregon State fell to 7-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the Pac-10 Conference. Cal Poly improved to 6-0.

Lara and Sakaguchi each garnered their team-leading 17th wins.
